There is more than one type of robbery defense

There is no denying the severity of a robbery charge. If you find yourself in this position, it's up to you to do whatever possible to avoid a conviction and the punishment that comes along with it.

Fortunately, there is more than one type of robbery defense to consider. With the right approach, it may be possible to convince the jury that you did not commit the crime. Subsequently, you can walk away without any penalty.

Here are some of the most common types of robbery defense strategies:

  • Innocence. This is exactly what it sounds like: You do your best to show the court that you did not commit the crime, such as by offering an alibi proving that you were not at the scene.
  • Entrapment. Did someone push you into committing a crime that you would not have committed on your own? This is where an entrapment defense strategy comes into play. It can be a challenge to prove, but it's something to consider nonetheless.
  • Duress. There are times when one person forces another person to commit a crime, such as robbery. An example of this would be if someone threatens you with death or serious harm if you don't follow the orders. Proving duress often comes down to showing the court that there was sufficient fear of harm.

Since every robbery case is different, it's difficult to say which defense strategy will work best. This is why you need to consider all your options, while also learning more about your legal rights and how the process will unfold.

Even if it appears that the odds are stacked against you, it's best to learn more about the many types of robbery defense in an attempt to put something together that can help you avoid a conviction. There is no way of knowing what the future holds, but you can't expect the best outcome if you don't do everything possible to tilt the scales of justice in your favor.
