Last week’s post on this blog discussed how young people in Tennessee face very strict penalties, even for a one-time mistake, should they have the misfortune of being accused of drunk driving. Community service and fines aside, a person who is under 21 and caught with alcohol in his or her system while driving will likely lose his or her license, sometimes for a very long time, if convicted of DUI.

While at first this might seem appropriate, young people often have lots of important places to travel on a daily basis, including to and from school and work. Having no transportation can mean that a teen or young adult is deprived of important opportunities in his or her life. Moreover, the person may at a minimum have to spend the next several years explaining to colleges and employers why he or she has a drunk driving conviction on his or her record.

All of this means that a person under 21 who gets charged in Tennessee with a drunk driving offense may want to strongly consider fighting the state’s case. We offer thorough, up-to-date advice that we believe is in the best interest of our clients, and we do not hesitate to use the legal means at our disposal to hold the state to its burden of proof.

Particularly if a person is underage, a drunk driving conviction can have negative short-term and long-term effects on a person’s personal and professional life. If you or a loved one is facing an underage drunk driving charge, please feel free to schedule a consultation to see how our experience and expertise can help you with your case.
