Credit card fraud comes in many forms

Credit card fraud is a serious crime with potentially serious penalties. For example, a conviction could result in a possible jail term, a criminal record and a fine that will put your finances at a disadvantage.

This white collar crime comes in many forms, including but not limited to:

  • Manufacturing counterfeit credit cards
  • Theft of a credit card
  • Using a lost or stolen credit card
  • Purchasing and/or selling credit cards
  • Making false statements in regards to ownership of a credit card
  • Pretending to be the cardholder

It’s easy to believe that some of these actions aren’t that big of a deal. For example, you use a credit card that you found to make a small purchase. Or maybe you pretend to be the owner of a family member’s credit card, assuming they won’t care if you use it.

Even a seemingly minor infraction can result in serious consequences. Rather than take this risk, you’re best off taking extreme caution any time it comes to the use of a credit card. Also, note that the same types of fraud are associated with debit cards.

If you’re charged with credit card or debit card fraud, learn more about your charges and the manner in which you’ll move through the legal system. You’re in a difficult spot, but there’s no reason to assume that you’ll be convicted and face the most serious penalties. There are steps you can take to protect your legal rights, all with the idea of escaping trouble altogether or at the very least minimizing the impact on your life.
